MoodBoards Representing Many Different Genres

These are my mood boards, each representing various musical genres. They all have a completely unique and opposing target audience, hold opposing views and create different forms of music, I created mood boards for Country, Hip Hop, Classical and Rock music. These four genres are all popular and known on an international scale but all have different target audiences and therefore their messages and portrayal and image are all conflicting.

1.) This moodboard represents Country music, I included images of iconic country music figures including Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton as every one associates them with Country Music as founding members of the genre. I included the American flag as it place of origin was America and stereotypically one is obliged to connect Country music with America as it is largely popular there. The two posters advertising Country Music and A 'Hall Of Fame' and 'Museum' are in Dakota and Nashville which are known for being havens of Country music.

2.) This moodboard represents Hip Hop music. The mood board shows what gender and race dominates the genre of Hip Hop, there is a lack of women in Hip Hop, this is reflected on the moodboard with no women on there, stereotypically one associates Hip Hop with black males, those from the African American origin, this is reflected in my moodboard as African American males are predominant in this genre, with only two white men on the mood board, it shows the African American men dominate this genre above all other genres and races. Tattoos and jewellery are typical of Hip Hop and Rap, this is represented in the moodboard with all the subjects of interest being decorated by tattoos and grand jewellery whilst in rebellious stances. One image on the moodboard is 'Parental Advisory Explicit Content', this shows that the genre is stereotypical of those who challenge the system and are mavericks of society.

3.) This moodboard represents Classical music. In this moodboard I included both contemporary and legendary figures of Classical music, including; Katherine Jenkins and Russell Watson and portraits of Mozarts, one of the world most famous classical composer and musicians. The instruments are typical of the genre including piano and violin, the colours are bland yet royal and warm, its all formal and sophisticated which reflects wealth and the social class that is associated with Classical music as a genre, the magazines are very nice and expensive, which reflects the target audiences great wealth and class in having a greater disposable income.

4.) This moodboard represents Rock music. This rock moodboard is decorated with an ensemble of great Rock icons, including the classical Rock of Elvis to the modern day Rock of Muse and Metallica and The Rolling Stones, it shows how rock evolved and is still as popular as it was, a sex pistols image is on the moodboard as the represent punk/rock which is a branch of rock and a hybrid of two genres, Sex Pistols were renouned for their challenge on society and the system and they showed great anarchy, a theme which has always been associated with that of Rock And Roll, even Elvis caused a stir and was viewed as controversial when he first came into the public eye but he shaped Rock and made it what it is today.

I created a prezi presentation, this presentation shows a timeline of music magazines, how different genres of music magazines evolved and the success of them all. It shows how music magazines came to prominence.

Survey Monkey Initial Audience Research:

This is a printscreen of a tweet I posted on my own twitter to gain results for my Survey Monkey Initial Audience Research.

This is Survey Monkey Initial Audience Research Questions.

For my research of my music magazine I produced a Survey Monkey Initial Audience research with six questions. I felt these questions were vital in gaining audience opinions and I will use these when creating and publishing my final music magazine, the results from the research will influence me because I will have a slight insight into the mind of the potential consumer.

Questions 1-2.

 Questions 3-4.

 Questions 5-6.

The results from my Survey Monkey:

Question 1. The majority of the audience researched where males and so I will ensure that I keep this in mind when considering any influences when producing my Music Magazine. Although this is relevant evidnece that Males dominate the Hip-Hop genre and so it is stereotypically and statistcally represented in an expected way.

Question 2. The majority of my audience were adolesences between the age of 15-17, this was an expected result as my peers are all between this age, it is useful as this is the age of my hip hop magazine, moving on to the 18-21, where I had some responses from. My target audience answered the questions so this makes it useful and me more confident in being influenced by these results.

Question 3. I gained a variety of results from this question, with every option answered, contrrary to previous questions where there were consensus answers. 'Yearly' was, however, the stand out result, I feel because of this the price of my magazine could potentially be highered to a more inflated price, it would be justified because of the specialist release of the magazine if it were to be yearly. I feel however a bi-monthly music magazine would be best as it justifies a higher price than the average magazines that are produced weekly, but it maintains its specialist identity and relevant and exclusive updates over time.

Question 4. The majority of the audience who answered were fans of pop, I will therefore keep this in mind before taking any real influence from this set of results as I am going for a hip hop magazine. For further research I may look at directing a survey monkey at those who are primary members of the Hip-Hop genre target audience, as their results would be more valuable and relevant to me.

Question 5. The majority of the answers voted for £1.50-£2.00, this was expected as if one reflects back on to Question 2, most of those who answered were of the ages 15-17 and therefore would have less disposable income and would vote for a lower price. The fact I have gone for a Bi-Monthly publication justifies a slightly inflated price.

Question 6. The results were mixed but the majority went for not bothered, suprisingly enough. I predicted that this niche target audience, being adolscences from the age of 15-17, that more images than articles would be more popular, I was however proven wrong and the audience research suggested it didnt affect them in any way. However on other results, more images did slightly pip more articles. I plan to keep my writing minimal and concise with only relevant, limited, large images.

  1. Mood-boards

Excellent knowledge and understanding of chosen genres evident throughout the images you have chosen to represent each genre. This is enhanced even more by your commentary underneath each mood-board as they all explore representations well, touching on core issues such as representation of ethnicity and gender – ideologies that would be worth exploring further. You also demonstrate a very clear and confident understanding of chosen music genres and how they employ colour, design and artist to attract their audiences.

    Podcast

Your podcast summary is very good; you employ relevant terminology well and even touch on some social issues especially when discussing each genre but this is lacks detail. Next time really explore this (African American male domination of Hip Hop, etc.) by comparing whether this is evident in the other genres you researched even more.

    Prezi

Change link to name of prezi instead in order to remove the long hyperlink and tidy the overall look of your page.
I could not access your prezi, please check the link and correct problem as soon as possible.

    Textual Analysis

Although I know you have completed this, I am unable to access your link due to the fact that you have uploaded the wrong one to your research page. Please correct this as soon as possible.

    Go Animate

Excellent summary of your textual analysis findings which covers key points such as the type of magazine, style and layout well and how these will influence the construction of your magazine. Well done.

    Survey Monkey

Strong evidence of conducting audience research provided. You have also clearly analysed and commented on each question’s result by stating how it will influence your construction stage. Nonetheless, it would be beneficial to have an overall summary also which comments on what you have learnt overall from your audience and whether you will need to conduct further audience research at some point during your construction stage.

Continue to build on your research.
